200 Blog Posts and 13.1 Miles Later

You’re all still with me. Really? I had this idea as I noted that I was getting close to a 200th blog post. Only two or so years into my little home on the web, I realize that I’ve found what I love about doing this; they’re my thoughts, stories, and life, unfiltered. Pen to paper so to speak, and you follow along. Whether it’s out of obligation or because you really enjoy what I have to say, you’re still here. I’m humbled by that. So, thank you and thank you again. Now onto #200!

“Plenty of people miss their share of happiness, Not because they never found it, But because they didn’t stop to enjoy it.” William Feather

I have so much to be thankful for this year. Sure, I’ve had my share of setbacks, but I think they’re common in the regular ebb and flow of life.

Exactly one year ago, I was feeling miserable. A year ago, I looked like this:

Muppet Me

I’ve written about this before, my six-day stint in the hospital wasn’t really a pleasant one, it reminded me that maybe I am not as invincible as I thought. Shortly thereafter, I made a promise to myself: A half marathon by year’s end.

So today – as this post hits the ether – I embark on that goal. Today I will be running the “Holiday Half Marathon,” 13.1 miles. Some may think I’m crazy to do so, I was one of them.

Then I started running. My first run, the “Race for the Roses” 5k (3.1 miles,) was the longest run I had done out on the road when I started. It wasn’t too bad, but I wasn’t hooked. I was still somewhat lost. I hadn’t really understood the best way to train.

Then, in August, I really got serious about running. I started to run outside, since it was nice. I started planning routes around my home, enjoying the run. There are hills and I’m crazy, so I recorded video:

And then I noticed that I could run and I was consistent. But I needed goals, so I signed up for the Oktoberfest 10k Road Race (6.2mi):

And then the “Run Like Hell 10k (6.2 Mi)”

And the “Hot Buttered Run 12k (7.5mi)”

Since July 1st, I have run 158.6 miles. With my longest run to date being 11.2(ish) miles. That’s a lot of miles on these tires. And yes, I can’t wait to run some more.

I certainly have not done this alone. I really have to thank a couple of people who have encouraged me (Tim,) answered my questions (Cory and Clark,) and kicked my butt from time to time, when I needed it, of course (Mark.)

Mark & Tim, thanks for joining me on this and many other running adventures. Cory, thanks for “running me in,” as they say.

If you’d like to see my evolution as a runner as I’ve blogged it, check out my previous posts on the topic

So today: December 11th, 8 AM – I embark on completing my goal.

To finish a half marathon.

I have a goal in mind that I would love to complete. We’ll see if I can do it.

If you would like to watch me run it, and see my progress, you may catch a “glympse” here. Or, I may actually be live tweeting how much it sucks. Either way, I’ll cross the finish line, even if I’m crawling.

See you all on the other side.

Oh, to be Popular. #199

This post is my 199th blog post on Schnikism.com – I have something special planned for #200. Look for it tomorrow morning, bright and early. :)

I’ve been trying to organize my Flickr account. Being obsessed with statistics, I was also looking at which photos have been the most popular, the results are interesting, humorous and a cool way to walk down memory lane. Here are the top ten photos, by number of views:

Alcatraz Views?

I normally don’t sell things. But, I do like to help out a friend from time to time. My friend Aaron Hockley, Skilled photographer and all-around smart guy, has really given me a lot of advice on photography and camera equipment from time to time, and has published his first collection, an Alcatraz Book.

Being a fan of things that are weird, unique and historical, perhaps even a nerd of such articles, I’m excited to help him promote his book of photos, aptly titled, Alcatraz Views.

Give it a looksee, buy a couple copies for your friends and family, they make GREAT stocking stuffers!

So Amazing …And So Sad

I admit it. I’ve been watching the X-factor. It’s not because I like reality shows. It’s not because I like singing competitions, but because of this young girl:

At the end of the video, when she got the four yeses, did you hear it? Did you hear what she told the judges when given such a huge opportunity? Did you see the grace she displayed?

“Thank you, I won’t let you down.”

Such spunk. Such grace. Such hope and life. Such Maturity. Such a story that I couldn’t help but to root for her.

Seeing someone, so young, with so much confidence, with such a fire within, a light that carries forth, it’s breath-taking, and it’s inspiring.

And what a voice. It’s amazing.

Tonight, she was in the bottom two by number of votes, still a model of grace and confidence, with tears in her eyes, she still had a smile on her face. She assured one of the judges, “Please don’t cry, I’m good with anything.”

And the judges deadlocked; so America sent her home.

I still think she’s amazing. I really hope this isn’t the end of the line for her. She has such promise

Viva Las Vegas! My Vacation – In Pictures

As you saw from yesterday’s post, The Fountains of Bellagio, I was recently in Las Vegas for vacation. I love Vegas, but it can be a little overstimulating. So much to see and do.

There are some really cool things if you open your eyes and take a quick look around. I wanted to share some of the sights with you. The rest you can see on my flickr page.

Amazingly enough, even in December, Las Vegas has blue skies!

The food in Vegas is amazing. This little delight came from the Flamingo Garden Buffet.

Something about this picture, at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, reminds me of an 80′s Bangles song.

At the Venetian Hotel’s Christmas in Venice scene, they had a Christmas Tree that easily could have doubled for a Lady Gaga outfit.

I came across this fountain, it’s glimmering water and various coinage called to me.

And sometimes, you can even find a serpent in the water.

I Love A Good Fountain

Especially set to music. I went to Las Vegas recently. I might be a little obsessed with the fountains at Bellagio. I think the scenery and that they can shoot water 100 feet into the air is pretty cool.

While down there this trip, my friend and I decided to stop and watch it. I decided to record it.

It’s a really good song, too. :)

Here you are. :)

On A Wing

I’m not a confident flyer.*

I hold my breath as if it is going to help. I know the logic behind it, more likely to … car wreck etc… But, I can’t help it. There is something about flying that defies all logic. That the science of aerodynamics defies the laws of gravity. There are many things I think of to help me through.

I try to enjoy the beauty of that moment when we mortals leave the ground, to experience that momentary life from our Earthbound duties.

I enjoy the scenery when we punch through the clouds. When we shed the burden of the dark grey skies and reach for the sun.

I take solace in knowing that at this moment, i am ok. I am leaving fear behind. I may be holding my breath and closing my eyes, but my heart is still beating and I am going places.

Sometimes you have to swallow your fear, hold your breath, close your eyes, listen to your heart and leap forward into the clouds.

What My Blog Says About Me.

Lets be honest. I don’t put a whole lot of thought into my blog. I don’t have an editorial strategy of what I’m going to post. I do, however, put a lot of “me” into this space. The sub-theme, “Heaping Scoops Of My Brain,” isn’t just clever witticism, This space is really all about what I’m thinking at the moment.

Clouds from a plane

I don’t have a tag cloud enabled on my blog for a reason. I don’t think it adds anything to your experience here. However, I was going through some of the features on the back-end of wp.com and I found it has a tag cloud of your commonly used tags and such. These are mine. As I approach the end of the year, and my 200th(!!) blog post, I was going to do some reflection to what I’ve learned in my time here. Prepare yourself. :)

I have never thought of myself as a motivator or as inspirational. I have always just thought myself as a storyteller, someone you can relate to and someone you’d like to call a friend.

Again, thanks for sticking around with me. I hope it gets better from here. (If you want to see the posts which are related to the above tags. Click on them, it should take you there.) Going through them, I learned a lot about my writing style and how it’s changed since I began this thing.

Through My Eyes

I’ve been doing a little digging in the photography world. Been trying to understand composition and trying to capture the things I see in my mind’s eye. I know that a camera can’t do it all justice, but I thought I would share some of the things I’ve been snapping. I’d love your opinion. :)

Bacon. Croissant. Dressing.

Those three words equal extreme deliciousness.

Now that I’ve recovered from my turkey-malaise and my food coma, I wanted to share a recipe that I devised for this year. I was talking to a friend not to long ago and we were wondering what you could do to spice up the dressing or stuffing that goes with your turkey dinner. So we devised an idea.

Bacon. Croissant. Dressing.

While I know there’s a technical difference between dressing and stuffing but I don’t think it’s safe to stuff anything edible in the bird, so I make dressing.

Here’s the ingredients:

Ingredients for Stuffing:
1/2 cup of green onions, chopped
3-4 strips of bacon, chopped
1 cup Granny Smith Apple, chopped
1/2 teaspoon of dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon of dried rosemary
2 tablespoons of dried parsley flakes
2 cups of soft croissants, chopped
1 egg
1/3 cup of milk
Salt and pepper, to taste

…and here’s what you do.

Fry your bacon to just passed “cooked” stage, some people like crispy bacon, but I was afraid of it burning. I used pepper bacon, but you can use any type of bacon that you like. Once your bacon is cooked, drain and chop it into small sized pieces.

Dice your green onion, granny smith apples, and chop your croissants into bite-sized pieces.

Combine your green onions, bacon, apples, thyme, rosemary, parsley, and croissants in a large bowl.

Mix the milk and egg, beat until combined, toss with dry ingredients.

Put everything in an oven-safe casserole pan, bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees (or until everything is heated to 170+ degrees.)

Enjoy!
