Commentary: “Burn the Koran Day” – WTF?

Normally I go out of my way to stay away from Political or otherwise incendiary commentary on my blog. Mostly because I know there are people who do it for a living and I also know there are people who don’t want to read about it. This time, I just can’t be silent about it. I can’t let this pass by without at least a small rant, so please bear with me. If this doesn’t interest you, I understand. But I couldn’t not comment on it.

From CNN.com:

In protest of what it calls a religion “of the devil,” a nondenominational church in Gainesville, Florida, plans to host an “International Burn a Quran Day” on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Dove World Outreach Center says it is hosting the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

As a friend of mine says: “That just sets my blood to boilin!” In this day and age, how can someone think that it would be a good idea to burn another religion’s holy book? Let alone, how could a Christian Church think this was a good idea? How could anyone, who follows the teachings of any Church think this was a Kind, Just or smart thing to do?

I’m not a particularly religious person to begin with. That being said, There is no reason that we should stand idly by and not lift our voices in outrage. I can’t imagine that this church would think it was a good idea to take on the est. 1.5 BILLION followers of Islam. The last time I checked, the Church preaches tolerance. This is anything but.

Seriously.

Added:

I have been watching Twitter pretty constantly about this and ran across a tweep who lives in Florida and wanted to publish his thoughts on it. Feel free to give it a read. Good Stuff:  Awesomeologist

Also Interesting. I’ve been reading that the Allied Commander of the Troops in Afghanistan, David Petraeus says that this Church’s actions will threaten the Military; Yet, the Church is going to go forward. This is ridiculous.

  1. This infuriated me, too. But for me, it isn’t about tolerance. In fact, Christianity at its core isn’t about tolerance. The Bible is pretty clear about what’s right and what’s wrong. Murder? No. We won’t tolerate it. Lies? No. We won’t tolerate it. Injustice? No. We won’t tolerate it. But this Burn-the-Koran shenanigan? This is something else altogether. This is a group of people who call themselves “Christians” and therefore represent Christ, but yet they are acting in a very unChristlike way. God created everyone–including the Muslims. And He gave us free will so that we can choose whatever religious beliefs we like. If God will allow Muslims to choose to follow Allah, then what right do I have to say they can’t? I DON’T. The Word of God tells me two things at its very core: LOVE GOD and LOVE PEOPLE. This is accomplishing neither. This is a group of people setting themselves up as judge and jury. God is our only judge and these folks are WAY out of line!

  2. There is SO much wrong with this whole situation. When CNN is spouting proper theology to a “preacher” and he’s just brushing it off and saying something else ridiculous, that’s just crazy. For a church with a title like, “Dove WORLD OUTREACH Church” they sure don’t have much of an idea of what it takes to reach the world.

Book burning is what the Nazi’s did, for the record, with the Bible in the name of nationalism no less. This should frighten EVERYONE, not just the endangered troops.

  3. I just cannot understand this. Islam did not crash into the WTC any more than the Christians (aka KKK) persecuted the African-Americans. All Al-Queida terrorists may be Islamic, but not all those of the Islamic faith are terrorists!!! Ugh, I hate ignorant people :[ (hoping I don’t sound too ignorant myself in my metaphore!!)

  4. Fantastic blog! I actually love how it is easy on my eyes as well as the information are well written. I am wondering how I can be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your rss feed which should do the trick! Have a nice day!
